Nämä ovat tuotekuvia suunnittelemastani tuolista. Ennen kuin kerron lisää tuolista, haluan kertoa jotain näistä kuvista. Kuvat on ottanut lahjakas valokuvaajaystäväni Sara Urbanski. Halusin juuri Saran kuvaajaksi, sillä hän on erityisen taitava kertomaan kuvillaan tarinoita.

Suunnitteluprosessissa aika on käsitteenä vahvasti läsnä. Katsomme tulevaisuuteen ja mietimme, minkälaiseen aikaan suunnitelmamme sijoittuvat. Pohdimme myös sitä, kuinka aika kohtelee suunnittelemiamme esineitä ja mitä niille tapahtuu ajan saatossa. Pyrimme myös muokkaamaan tulevaa aikaa sen tiedon avulla, jota meillä on tässä hetkessä. Usein se tieto on kerätty menneisyydestä - ajasta, joka on jo kulunut.
These are product photos of my newest chair design. Before telling more about the chair, I’d like to say a few words about the pictures themselves. They have been taken by my talented friend, photographer Sara Urbanski. I wanted her, specifically, to take the pictures, since she is particularly skilled in telling stories with her photographs.
This story is called Meidän aikamme (Our Time).
Time as a concept is very present throughout the designing process. We look towards the future and try to predict, in what kind of time our designs will be situated. We also ask ourselves how time will treat the objects we have designed and what will happen to them as time passes. Furthermore, we try to shape future time using the knowledge we have acquired in the past – in a time that has already passed.
Muotoilu on ajatuksen tekemistä näkyväksi. Tarvitsemme siihen tietoa, taitoa ja tarinankerrontaa. Ajassamme korostuu tieteellinen tutkimus ja haluamme tehdä asioita yhä paremmin, kehittyä ja luoda parempaa tulevaisuutta. Taiteella, luovuudella ja estetiikalla on tässä tutkimuksessa iso ja tärkeä rooli. Jätämme jälkeemme rakennettuja ympäristöjä, tiloja, esineitä, taideteoksia, siveltimen vetoja, musiikkia, tanssia, teatteria, kirjallisuutta, tarinoita ja tekoja. Jätämme jälkeemme myös ajatuksia, kokemuksia, muistoja ja muistikuvia, kulttuurin, joka on sidottu meidän aikaamme. Se on meidän perintömme.
Design is about making thought visible. To do that, we need knowledge, skills and narratives. The central role of academic study and our desire to improve and to create a better future is typical of our time. But art, creativity and aesthetics are a method of studying the world, too – very often much closer to academic research than we are used to thinking. We leave behind built environments, spaces, objects, works of art, paint brush strokes, music, dance, theatre, literature, narratives and actions. We also leave behind thoughts, experiences and memories – a culture embedded in our time. It is our legacy.
Tuoli on esine, jolla istutaan. Sillä on aina käyttäjä, jolle istumisesta syntyy kokemus. Tuolia ympäröi aina myös tila. Se käy vuoropuhelua arkkitehtuurin, taide-esineiden ja eri aikakausien tyylisuuntausten kanssa. Tuoli käy vilkasta vuoropuhelua myös ympäröivän yhteiskunnan kanssa.
A chair is an object to sit on. It always has a user – a person who experiences sitting on that particular chair. Furthermore, a chair is always surrounded by space – it holds a dialog with architecture, with other artefacts and different style periods. And it is embedded in the context of the surrounding society.
Tuoli kertoo omaa tarinaansa. Se kertoo aikakaudesta, johon se on suunniteltu ja sen miten istumme, miksi istumme tai kuinka meidän tulisi istua. Tuoli kertoo myös, kuinka työskentelemme tai vietämme vapaa-aikaamme. Sen materiaalit kertovat arvoistamme ja tavoitteistamme ja rakenne siitä osaamisesta, jota meillä on. Tuoli kertoo tarinaansa kansamme historiasta.
A chair narrates its own story. It tells about the period of time for which it was designed and about how we sit, why we sit and how we should sit. It also speaks of how we work or spend our free time. Our material choices reflect our values and goals, and the design we have created mirrors the skills and know-how we possess. A chair also reflects the history of our nation.
Haluan tämän tarinan myötä esittää tukeni ja kiitokseni kaikille tieteen ja taiteen tekijöille, kasvattajille, opettajille ja tukijoille. Eri alojen taiteilijat ja tieteentekijät ympäri maailmaa vaalivat meidän perintöämme. Toivottavasti näin on myös tulevaisuudessa.

With this story I want to express my support and gratitude to all researchers, artists, teachers and sponsors. Artists of different fields and people in the academic world around the globe cherish our legacy. I hope this will continue even in the future.
